Why Plant a Church?

Aren’t there enough churches? Why start another one?

To bring hope to the hopeless.

That was me (Greg).  At 12 years old, my family had suffered divorce two times, my sister and I fought constantly, and I felt unwanted and like a failure. I struggled to find a reason to go on, I mean… Why? I didn’t think that it would or even could get better so I considered suicide. Until the moment at a church Jesus stepped into my life and intervened. It was in Jesus that I found all that my soul was longing for. What I felt was hope. There is a hope that is found in Jesus that goes beyond anything that this world can offer and that is why new churches are important. There are people all around us who are struggling with loneliness, hopelessness, brokenness, and struggling to find their identity in this world and Jesus offers us an answer. He offers us relationship, hope, healing and wholeness, and a place in the family of God.  That’s why we are planting The Well Church, so everyday broken people, just like me, can find the hope that only Jesus gives. That’s what we are about, leading people to hope by loving them like Jesus.

Do you remember the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? Goldilocks struck out a couple times before finding that perfect fit. The truth is that each church has its strengths and its weaknesses and each church will appeal to some people more than others. Our desire is to do our best to be a church that reaches a new group of people that either haven’t quite found the church for them and to connect people with Jesus that other churches haven’t been able to. Our church won’t be for everyone but The Well may be the perfect place for you.

When a new church is starting it comes with a lot of opportunities for God to raise up leaders for His Glory. People who may have been sitting the bench or just going through the motions may find themselves being challenged to grow and develop into a leader. In Jesus’s ministry He chose some people who weren’t exactly leadership material and invested in them. By the time the church really began to form, those same guys who weren’t ideal candidates were now turning the world upside down! We believe that starting this new church is an opportunity to raise up and develop new leaders who can help change one person’s world at a time.  Are you one of these new leaders? Meet the Smiths

Greg is the lead pastor of The Well. He and his wife Hailey moved from Miami, FL with their daughter to start The Well Church.

Greg grew up struggling with feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. Feeling like a failure and unwanted he battled depression and thoughts of suicide before discovering the incredible hope found in a relationship with Jesus. Now, he is a Bible teacher and church planter alongside Hailey who is a pediatric nurse.

Joe serves as the Ministries Pastor at The Well. In 2021, he and his wife Kari made the bold decision to leave their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma to join the Smiths in planting The Well. At the time, life seemed to be settling perfectly—they had just purchased their dream home and were prepared to enjoy the rewards of years of dedication and hard work. But God began to stir something deeper in their hearts, calling them to step out in faith and pursue ministry in a new place. 

Joe brings years of experience serving on church praise teams, playing a variety of instruments, working in various volunteer roles, while Kari has always had a passion for working with children and serving in kids’ ministry. Together, they are honored to be part of what God is building through The Well.

Leadership Structure

The Well is currently led by Greg and Hailey with the guidance and accountability of an outside Leadership Team as well as coaches from church planting organizations such as We Start Churches, Stadia, and North American Ministries. As The Well grows it will be led by a biblically qualified Leadership board.

We are committed to practicing sound Biblical Christianity full of grace and truth.

We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons, that these are equal in every divine perfection, and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption.

We believe in God, the Father, an infinite, eternal, personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of all people, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. We believe that God is the Creator, Sustainer, and Righteous Ruler of the universe.

We believe He is God’s unique Son; the only one of a kind. The Scripture teaches that He is God revealed in flesh. In His Divine nature He is fully God and in His human nature fully man. He is the One once crucified for man’s sin, the now risen and glorified Savior and Lord who mediates between God and man and who gives us access to the Father through His intercession. None can come to the Father unless they come through Him.

We believe that all of the attributes of God are ascribed to the Holy Spirit by the Scriptures. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, sent into the world by the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Christ, and that He is an abiding helper, teacher and guide.

We believe God created all human beings in His image, male and female, to glorify Him. Therefore, human life and worth begins at conception. Marriage has been instituted by God solely between one man and one woman. Every human life, having been made in the image of God, has inherent, undeniable dignity, value, and purpose.

We believe that although made in God’s image, all human beings from Adam onward are sinners by nature and choice and are, therefore, under condemnation. Sin distorted and affected every dimension of humanness. All people, under Adam, are born with a corrupt, sin nature. This left us in a hopeless condition from which Christ alone can redeem us. He alone can redeem all who trust in Him.

In light of humankind being created in God’s image and being created male and female, which we believe scripture teaches are the only sexes, the gift of biological sex is thus part of the goodness of God’s creation. He designed and created  separate sexes for His glory and made them equal in dignity, value, and worth as image bearers of Him. Genesis 1:27-Genesis 2:7. We acknowledge that there are some who struggle with gender identity and the growing belief that there are more than two gender expressions. We believe that God’s desire is for our gender identity to be expressed in accordance with our biological sex. We believe that sexual activity is to be exclusively practiced within the parameters of biblical marriage, and that marriage is defined in both Old and New Testaments as an institution ordained by God as a lifelong one-flesh union of only one man and one woman. Any sexual activity practiced outside of biblical marriage, whether heterosexual or homosexual, is a sin.

Genesis 1&2, Matthew 19:4-6. We understand that biblical marriage is designed to reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church. Ephesians 5:31-32

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

We believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church, consisting of a gathering of believers in Jesus Christ, united for worship, service and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of glorifying God through advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ in a lost and dying world.

We believe that a person receives pardon and forgiveness for their sins when they admit to God that they are a sinner and in godly sorrow they turn from their sin and trust in the work of Christ as redemption for their sin. This acceptance of God’s great salvation involves belief in Christ’s death on the cross as man’s substitute and the fact of God’s raising Him from the dead as predicted. It is a salvation by grace alone and not of works. We believe in God’s saving grace that calls forth from all people: faith, repentance, confession, baptism by immersion, and new life and ministry through the Spirit.

It is God’s will that all be saved, but since man has the power of choice, God saves only those who chose to repent of their sin and believe in the work of Christ on the cross. Those who refuse in this life to repent and believe have no later chance to be saved and thus will stand before God and face the consequences of their sin without the righteousness of Christ.

We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the endless suffering of the wicked in Hell, and the eternal joy of the redeemed upon the renewal of all things.

While some denominations dictate how a church must operate it is good to know that The Well is an independent and self-governing local congregation that is affiliated with the National Association of Free Will Baptists. We enjoy the partnership and encouragement that comes with being a part of the Free Will Baptist Denomination but are not controlled by the denomination. The Well’s loyalty will first and foremost, always be committed to following Christ and carrying out His mission in our community, city, and world.
